Biomarkers of homeostasis and/or health

  • For each health biomarker, please indicate the existence of a correlation/association with (one or more) micronutrient status markers, or with intake, as Y / N / ? (Yes / No / unknown).
  • If there is a correlation (Y), please indicate the direction in the next field (Inverse or Direct with higher micronutrient status: I or D)
  • Was the correlation observed with micronutrient status (S) and/or with micronutrient intake (I)?
  • For both existence and absence of a correlation, you may add references to support your view. Insert a number in the table and list the numbered references below the table.
  • Your judgement of the consistency of the data, by assigning a score from 1-5 (1: large uncertainty, 5: generally accepted)
  • Fields that are not applicable you may leave blank.

Type of studies/data that may be used

  • intervention studies, suppletion of the micronutrient. These studies are more likely to provide intake data than data on micronutrient status, but both types of data may be used.
  • please include only data from interventions with physiological doses; effects of high intakes are of interest, but data from studies with extreme high, pharmacological doses, might obscure our insight into the normal physiological relationships
  • observational, cross-sectional or cohort studies in which dietary intake and/or nutrient status is measured and the association with one or more “health” biomarkers is given
  • we will restrict ourselves to data from human studies

Since we expect no systematic or comprehensive review, a standardized methodology of searching and reviewing the literature is not required. However, to help you find the relevant type of studies more quickly, we suggest a series of keywords that you may use in your search strategy Image:Figure TableA.jpg
