Introduction

guidelines

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is essential for normal reproductive function in males and females. Under physiologic conditions, FSH is secreted into the circulation as a complex mixture of several isoforms that vary in the degree of glycosylation. Glycosylation of FSH is important for the serum half-life of the hormone and coupling of the receptor to adenylate cyclase.

Biological Function

guidelines

Stimulates development of follicle and spermatogenesis in the reproductive organs.

In humans, a single gene encodes a common alpha chain of 4 glycoprotein hormones: chorionic gonadotropin, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (FSHA). The hormone-specific beta chains of these related hormones are encoded by separate genes. The FSHB gene encodes the beta subunit of follicle-stimulating hormone.
