14,15-Dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acid (14,15-DHET) is a metabolite of arachidonic acid metabolism. 14,15-DHET is the main product of 14,15-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (14,15-EET) metabolism in intact human blood vessels. Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) are potent regulators of vascular homeostasis and are bound by cytosolic fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs); FABPs are potent inhibitors of 14,15-EET conversion to 14,15-DHET. Endothelial cells, but not smooth muscle cells, convert 14,15-EET to 14,15-DHET, and this conversion results in a loss of vasodilator activity. 14,15-DHET is a potent activator of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha).
